Nanograins

In this set-up, a flat burner (McKenna) provides flames of premixed hydrocarbon and oxygen gases at various richness’s. Such a laminar flame is a one-dimensional chemical reactor offering a broad range of combustion conditions and sampling of by-products. The burner is installed in a chamber operated at low pressure, typically in the range from 20 to 100 mbar by continuous pumping. The by-products are then extracted by a water cooled quartz cone (hole diameter 0.2-2 mm) inserted into the flame at a known distance from the burner (1-50 mm). The extracted burned gas and soot flow through a Laval nozzle into a chamber maintained at a pressure of about few 10-2 mbar. Soot samples are collected by impaction on a window for ex situ measurements by IR, vis-UV absorption, Raman spectroscopy or HRTEM images. The molecules and nanoparticles can also be studied by mass spectrometry via a time of flight mass spectrometer, after skimming the supersonic flow shaped by the Laval before entering into the TOFMS.
